What to Expect from SIA Training & How to Choose a Provider

If you want to work in private security, SIA training is your essential first step. This guide explains what to expect, the different course types, and how to choose the right training provider for your needs.

What is SIA Training?

SIA training is a legal requirement for many security roles in the UK. It ensures you have the knowledge and practical skills to work safely and legally. All training must be completed through an SIA-approved provider and includes exams and assessments.

Types of SIA Training Courses

Door Supervisor

The most common licence — allows you to work in pubs, clubs, events, retail security and more.

Security Guard

Covers manned guarding for static sites, retail, and more. Cannot cover licensed premises like pubs and clubs.

CCTV Operator

For those monitoring public or private CCTV systems.

Close Protection

Specialist training for bodyguards and high-risk protection work.

What to Expect During Your Training

SIA training is a mix of classroom learning, written exams, and (for some courses) practical assessments.

You can expect:
  • 4–6 days of classroom sessions
  • Knowledge tests
  • Practical exercises for Door Supervisor and Close Protection
  • First Aid training if required (must be done before SIA course if not already held)

How to Choose a Training Provider

Not all SIA training providers are equal. To avoid wasting time or money:

Check:
  • They are SIA-approved and work with recognised awarding bodies (Highfield, NOCN, etc.)
  • Whether First Aid is included or needs to be completed separately
  • Course reviews and reputation
  • Price and schedule flexibility
  • Location — is it convenient for you?
